Platysmal Bands
These are tight cords seen in the front and sides of the neck (say Eeeee to exaggerate their appearance) in the platysma muscle -which in young persons is a sheet-like muscle arising from the mandible (jawbone) forming the surface of the neck and inserting into the anterior chest wall. As we get older, and particularly in persons with tension in the jaw or a tendency to clench the teeth, the muscle fibres clump together into vertical bands, and can pull the skin of the lower face down and forwards, thus contributing to jowls.
A procedure known as the Nefertiti jawlift - named after the famous Egyptian Queen whose profile is an eternal symbol of beauty and elegance- where Botox is injected along the anterior jawline and into the muscle bands in the front and sides of the neck, rebalances the muscles of the neck, giving it a more youthful appearance, and reducing jowling.
